String trees are optional. The purpose of each tree is lower the angle of the strings from the nut to the tuning machine post. The high E and B strings may slip out of the nut groove under heavy bending. It's your decision to install or leave them off.

There are locking tuners that are staggered in height, and if used, string trees wouldn't be needed at all.
